RCTA Representative Council Meeting Agenda

Redwood City Teachers’ Association Mission Statement: The Redwood City Teachers Association exists to promote and protect the professional health and longevity of its members. It is dedicated to the pursuit and support of excellent teaching, equity, collective bargaining, and fair working conditions. We are devoted to the education of the children, their families, and the community of Redwood City.

1. Call meeting to order at: 3:47 p.m.

2. Land Acknowledgement: We are doing this work on the unceded land of the Ohlone Nations.

6. Site by Site 1 Minute Share-outs

Adelante Selby Reps: iReady; conferences; planning for STEM/Science Fair Night in April; Family created the program - take a science kit home and can work on it with families (2nd year); 4th Grade preparing for Gold Country Trip; NUA lessons today; Dance performance

CDC Preschool Reps: State Audit - visited one classroom. Waiting for results; waiting to find out what will happen with TK; struggling with SPED children; Teachers are supposed to work with students with IEPs, but are not getting compensated for it.

Clifford Reps: Fair starting today; iReady testing; conferences coming up; working on report cards; seems like going fine.

Garfield Reps: looking like it is not going to be a middle school next year. None of the middle school teachers are returning. Will be up to 5th grade school. John Baker - it’s on the table that 6,7, 8 will close and move to MIT; Huge change; John Baker is in the middle of talking with parents.

Henry Ford Reps: Busy with iReady , report cards, conferences; Seems like surge of newcomer students from Central America…5 students in the last week.

Hoover Reps: Talent Show at the end of the month; glow middle school dance this Friday; end of the quarter

Kennedy Reps: Positive reinforcement - student of the month; morning speaker call out the names and highlight positive behavior; issues - 150 minor behavior issues; music department getting ready for performance

McKinley Reps: iReady; Kids were super good last week - got pj day today. Job Assignments List should have gone out.

North Star Reps: Musical last month - 60 students in it; iReady for student led conferences; school auction at the end of the month.

Orion Reps: Same status quo - iReady, report cards

Roosevelt Reps: iReady, report cards, conferences - elementary; have some lion dancers for an assembly in honor of Lunar New Year; more principal drama in middle school - MS teachers are not feeling heard; some teachers feel fearful for their safety because of a student; brought Antonio for meeting

Roy Cloud Reps: School Buddy Day - Upper Grades with Lower Grades; ASB with Buddy Box - 1st one; Middle School Dance St. Patrick’s Day - Neon; Play Little Mermaid; 7th Grade Yosemite first week of April;

SLP: Going well; working on progress reports

Taft Reps: Doing ok; iReady, Character Trait of the month - fairness, next one empathy; Principal put out teacher placements - one teacher was upset about placement (involuntary transferred) ; teacher has more seniority, but other teacher had other responsibility; do not have a full time psychologist; have a lot of students with needs; Have counselors



7. Committee Reports

Bargaining/Negotiations Team: Brian Cagle, Michelle Territo, Erinn Washburn, Jenn Tanti, Yesenia Bravo, Amy Barstad

Brian Cagle - Negotiations Meeting last week: meeting again this Thursday and will receive written proposals; many articles are getting negotiated. RCTA had written proposals for 10 articles; RCTA talked about the changes and why the changes were made; District spent time going over RCTA proposals; This Thursday - written counter proposals. We will know for certain what their proposals will be. One additional date (following Tuesday) for negotiations after Thursday. Last raise proposal: 10% this year; 2% next year.

Next Thursday, March 9th, wear your RCTA Union Shirt because it is a negotiation day.

Elections: Steve Murray

Elections for 2023 RA local representatives.

RCTA can send 2 people. If 2 people sign up, then they will be representatives and an election is not needed. Reps get to vote on the voice of education.

This year, the NEA Representative Assembly will be held in Orlando Florida July 1-6

Organizing Committee: Rita Melton, Cindy Meek, Jacob Havey, Angie Tupel

Wear shirts on Thursday, March 9th….our next bargaining date.

Committee has been communicating with each other via email. Rita has a connection with CBS…might be able to get some support. Want to get parent support if necessary. RCTA needs to have a clear message.

The district will no longer put the CTA sign up sheet in teacher’s on-boarding packet. This means more work for us….

New Teacher Orientation: 1 hour meeting where RCTA provides the form and lunch at the beginning of the new school year. DO will update information.

Climate Committee: Anastasia Stamates, Erinn Washburn and Jacob Havey meet with John Baker, Wendy Kelly, and Janet Lawson to discuss solutions to district-wide concerns.

Next Meeting - 3/20; any concerns please add it to the Climate Committee document


Human Rights and Equity Committee: Erinn Washburn-LGBTQ Chair, Joan Solari-Women’s Chair, Ethnic Minorities Chair-Open

Need Ethnic Minorities Chair

Erinn and Joan are both going to the conference.

Thanksgiving week conference - CSEA they do not want it taken away; they usually have a lot say; might go to impasse

40% of members took the survey: 40% - NO. 35% - Yes. 25% - Maybe.

Calendar not set because we have not reached agreement regarding Thanksgiving.

Survey unclear - what would happen with the two days before Thanksgiving? Teaching? ½ days? Full days? Days off?

Teachers need to be prepared that those days might be moved. RCTA does not have a lot of say over whether or not this will happen. RCTA can make a strong suggestion.

K-2 Reading Program Training: 6/13-6/16

**New Math Program training in August??


K-5 Math Pilot:

The Math Pilot Committee worked over two years researching and selecting new math curricula. They piloted 3 different programs: Eureka Math2, iReady Math, and Illustrative Math. The committee came to a consensus and selected the K-5 math program called Illustrative Math. This decision will be reported to the School Board. There is a 30 day period to review materials at the DO.
